Abstract
This study aimed to explore the extent to which Iraqi government and private sports institutions are actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within Iraqi society, and to analyze their contributions to promoting health, education, gender equality, poverty reduction, peace, and social justice. The research employed a descriptive and social analysis methodology, gathering data through a survey of 50 diverse sports institutions—including sports clubs, health clubs, and community programs—as well as interviews with officials from these organizations.
The results indicated that Iraqi government and private sports institutions contribute significantly to promoting health and well-being (72%) and quality education (55%), while their contributions were lower regarding gender equality (40%) and poverty reduction (30%). A moderate contribution (45%) was observed regarding the promotion of peace and social justice. The study attributed these gaps to limited resources, weak strategic planning, and socio-cultural factors that restrict the participation of certain groups, particularly women and girls.
The research concluded that Iraqi government and private sports institutions possess substantial potential to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals; however, they require strategic plans, clear visions, adequate funding, and the development of comprehensive programs that integrate sports with socio-economic policies to enhance their developmental impact. The study recommends adopting institutional policies that foster the participation of all groups—especially marginalized ones—in sports activities, while emphasizing the integration of sports into local development programs.
