Abstract

This research aimed to identify the relationship between cognitive flexibility and decision-making speed among team sports players, as well as to develop two scales to measure cognitive flexibility and decision-making speed in these players. The researcher adopted the descriptive approach, employing both survey and correlational methods, as it was best suited to the nature and objectives of the research.

The research population consisted of team sports players in Dhi Qar Governorate during the 2025–2026 sports season, totaling 332 players. These players were selected purposively, and the sample was divided into a construction sample of 200 players, a pilot sample of 10 players, and a final application sample of 100 players.

The researcher developed two scales: one for cognitive flexibility and another for decision-making speed. Each scale consisted of 25 items. The psychometric properties of both scales were verified, including validity, reliability, discriminatory power, and internal consistency. The results showed that both scales possessed a good degree of validity and reliability.

The results showed that team sports players possess a relatively high level of cognitive flexibility and decision-making speed. Furthermore, the results revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between cognitive flexibility and decision-making speed, indicating that a higher level of cognitive flexibility contributes to improved decision-making speed among players during athletic competitions.

In light of these findings, the researcher recommended focusing on developing the mental and cognitive abilities of team sports players through psychological and mental training programs, with an emphasis on cultivating cognitive flexibility and decision-making speed, given their crucial role in enhancing athletic and tactical performance.
