Abstract
This study aims to reveal the relationship between the number of official and unofficial matches managed by first-class football referees in Babylon Governorate and their refereeing performance level. Developing referee performance faces challenges related to the limited number of matches they officiate, especially unofficial ones, which affects their experience and decision-making ability. The study adopted a descriptive correlational approach and was applied to a purposive sample of 30 first-class referees in Babylon Governorate. Data were collected using a football referee performance analysis form and a form recording the number of official and unofficial matches each referee managed during the 2024-2025 season. Results showed a strong positive correlation between the number of official matches and performance level (r=0.87), and a moderate correlation between the number of unofficial matches and performance level (r=0.64). Official matches explained 75.6% of the variance in performance level. The study recommends increasing the number of unofficial matches allocated to referees and developing training programs based on simulation and digital analysis to compensate for the shortage of matches.
Keywords: Official matches, unofficial matches, performance level, football referees, Babylon Governorate.
